Look up to the Heavens

In 3 Nephi 11:3, the Nephites here a voice from heaven, but "they cast their eyes round about" rather than looking towards the source of the noise and looking towards heaven. The look horizontally for understanding. Today, the world is straying further away from the doctrines of the gospel. But we still often look towards friends, family and teachers for understanding rather than looking towards the Lord.
The past weekend in general conference Elder Yoon Hwan Choi talked about this very topic. He said it is good to look to your family and friends for advice. we can learn a lot from people who have already been through similar circumstances. Make sure you have good friends and family who you trust.
We can't rely solely on our horizontal resources. We need to include the Lord in our decisions. He is all-powerful and all-knowing. He can give you incite and revelation that is specific to your life. He can give you revelation through the Holy Ghost. He loves you and he wants you to have the best situation you can get. Elder Choi was a mission president in Washington where it rains all the time. He taught them that during the rain storms, they need to look up to the heavens and thank the Lord.
Ultimately, we can receive a lot from the people around us, but we should look to the Lord first and seek his guidance. I am trying to strengthen my relationship with the Lord, so that I can recognize his voice when it comes.
